Subgenus Chilomeniscus

Sand snakes were the most common find while road-cruising at night in Baja Sur. This first one was found near the fishing town of Loreto. These snakes were formerly considered to be Chilomeniscus stramineus – it remains in the Chilomeniscus subgenus. In 2018, Sonora was elevated to a ‘supergenus’ containing Chilomeniscus, Chionactis, and Sonora as subgenera. For more information, see:

Hi Mike. I’m in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur. Went looking for info to ID the meter long black snake with white bands that crossed my path at 5-6pm, just entering vegetated sand dunes at beach. This isn’t it, of course. May I send you a pic? Checked your more recent snake photos—they are terrific! Leslie
