California Kingsnake

Lampropeltis californiae
(Blainville, 1835)
Montezuma Co., Colorado. May 26th, 2011.

California kingsnakes are an uncommon find in the SE corner of Colorado. On my 2011 visit there, our group managed to find two of them alive on Colorado roads, and an additional DOR in adjacent Utah. These CO specimens are beautiful – note the black ‘moustache’. It was also fun to get my lifer ‘Cal King’ at the easternmost edge of their range.
