California Toad

Anaxyrus boreas halophilus
(Baird and Girard, 1853)
San Diego Co., California. March 30, 2012.

A really cool toad, adapted to a life in dry and semi-dry places. They will hunker down under rocks and in burrows, which can provide a slightly moist microclimate. My first was found near Escondido on a rocky hillside (top), and the third toad pictured is from Baja Norte. Note the damp soil.
