Eastern Box Turtle

Terrapene carolina carolina
(Linnaeus 1758)
Montgomery Co., Illinois. May 2, 1992.

Matrimony was involved in finding my first Eastern Box Turtle. My wife and I were married in her home town in central Illinois, and we stayed several days there. One day we visited a nearby lake, and as it sometimes happens with box turtles, we heard one scratching around in the leaf litter near the shore, and soon found it. It was beautifully marked, all yellow and black on its head and carapace, and of course I had no camera with me. I’ve seen many gorgeous boxies since then, including these specimens from Indiana and Illinois.
