Eastern Hellbender

Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis
(Daudin, 1803)
Harrison Co., Indiana. September 11, 2007.

I’ve had the good fortune to participate in several hellbender surveys, and this was the first hellbender of two found during my first survey. These animals were handled under a research permit, in order to take measurements, swab for chytrid fungus, take a DNA sample, and implant a PIT tag. I have a firm grip, as hellbenders are slick and very fluid, making them hard to hold.
