New Mexico Spadefoot

Spea multiplicata
(Cope, 1863)
Cochise Co., Arizona. August 12, 2006.

We were out in Arizona during the wettest monsoon season in eighty years. In many places the roadside ditches were filled with rain water, and we saw dozens of Couch’s spadefoots (Scaphiopus couchii) out on the roads at night. On one stretch of road we stopped for a different looking amphibian, which turned out to be our one and only multiplicata of the trip.
