Red Vine Snake

Siphlophis compressus
(DAUDIN, 1803)
Maynas, Depto Loreto, Peru. January 10, 2011.

For years I was fascinated by the colors and body structure of this snake, and seeing a picture of one in Harry Green’s Snakes: The Evolution and Mystery of Nature prompted my decision to visit the neotropics. I was not disappointed when I found my first specimen, it was everything I expected. I see one or two on every Peruvian expedition, and they remain a favorite.

My Flickr album for this species is here.
