Western Green Toad

Anaxyrus debilis insidior
(Girard, 1854)
Hidalgo Co., New Mexico. August 28, 2014.

On some nights, there are many toad encounters while road-cruising in the desert. I swerve to avoid them, and after the umpteenth Couch’s spadefoot, I no longer want to slow down and see what they are. This urge must be resisted, because every once in a while, the toad on the road is something new, like this green toad, found east of Rodeo where the road crossed over a wash.
