Eastern Long-tailed Salamander

Eurycea longicauda longicauda
(Green, 1818)
Union Co., Illinois. October, 1977

My very first longicauda was found under a rock along the edge of a small spring in the vicinity of Snake Road. Over the years the longtails I have observed are either a lemon-yellow color, or with an orange tint, almost matching that of a Cave Salamander. They can be very common in some areas, and an occasional find in other places. They seem to prefer rocky stream beds, caves and crevices, although I have found plenty up in the woods under logs and leaf litter.
