Great Plains Narrowmouth Toad

Gastrophryne olivacea
(Hallowell, 1856)
Val Verde Co., Texas. May 23, 1997.

On my first trip to west Texas, I heard large numbers of these plain little frogs calling in the roadside ditches of west Texas – their call is like a high-pitched sheep bleating. The top photo is an olivacea from Brewster Co., Texas, and the bottom frog is from Elk Co., Kansas.
