Morelet’s Crocodile

Crocodylus moreletii
(DUMÉRIL & BIBRON, 1851)
Quintana Roo, Mexico. June 30, 2016

The town of Coba curls around one end of a picturesque lake, which turned out to be a good place for croc-spotting. I saw one swimming about a hundred feet offshore, and when I walked out on a small pier to get closer, it changed course and swam right up. It’s a fair bet that some locals feed the crocodiles from the pier, in order to make some money from the tourists come to visit the Mayan ruins at Coba.
