Plains Hognose Snake

Heterodon nasicus
Baird & Girard, 1852
Carroll Co., Illinois.June 16, 2010.

This little hognose was crawling out in the open on an exposed sand blow. It took me a few trips to find one, and I was happy that it came from my home state. It turned out to be a good year for finding these little prairie rooters – I saw a total of five in Illinois and Kansas.
