Spotted Salamander

Ambystoma maculatum
(Shaw, 1802)
Mingo Swamp, Wayne Co., Missouri. May 8, 1984.

I’ve lost my original photos of the first Spotties that I saw at Mingo; below are specimens are a female from Indiana and a male (orange spots on the head) from Illinois. In the spring they are usually found under logs along the edge of vernal pools, the temporary ponds formed from spring rains.
