Amazon River Turtle

Podocnemis sextuberculata
Cornalia, 1849
Madre Selva field station, Depto Loreto, Peru. January 14, 2013.

This little turtle was found in a shallow cove along the edge of the Rio Orosa, near the Madre Selva field station. They can be found in the larger rivers but are more commonly seen in smaller tributaries like the Rio Orosa. Podocnemis are side-neck turtles (pleurodires), and the six species have their own family, Podocnemididae.
