Yellow-spotted Amazon River Turtle

Podocnemis unifilis
Troschel, 1848
Madre Selva field station, Depto Loreto, Peru. January 23, 2017.

I’ve seen these personable turtles in large numbers at the Quistacocha Zoo near Iquitos. I finally saw a live specimen, captured along the Rio Orosa near the Madre Selva field station. It was photographed in shallow water along the river’s edge. Podocnemis are side-neck turtles (pleurodires), and the six species have their own family, Podocnemididae.
