Bullsnake

Pituophis catenifer sayi
(Schlegel 1837)
Kankakee Co., Illinois. September 9, 1996.

It took a couple trips up to the sand counties of northeastern Illinois, but I finally found a bullsnake, several in fact. Details of my adventure can be found in the old herp journal Bullsnake In A Bottle. Since those first Illinois bullies I’ve managed to find them in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin. Regardless of locality they are impressive animals, in particular the six footers as thick as your wrist. Pictured are bullsnakes from Iowa (top) and North Dakota.
