Pacific Gopher Snake

Pituophis catenifer catenifer
(Blainville 1835)
Polk Co., Oregon. April 29, 2007.

I hadn’t seen a gopher snake since I was a kid growing up in the Puente Hills near Los Angeles. Our subdivision was at the base of the hills, and snakes of one kind or another were always turning up in backyards and garages. It was nice to finally see one again, albeit a serpent with a stumpy tail and some fire scars. To make up for it, I’ve seen a few since then that were real beauties.
