Crawfish Frog

Lithobates areolatus
(Baird and Girard, 1852)
Williamson Co., Illinois. March 15, 2014.

After several seasons of just missing these frogs, I was finally in the right place at the right time to see multitudes of areolata. Rain and snow melt had left ponds in agricultural fields, but now a warm southern wind and elevated temperatures made for perfect conditions, and the crawfish frogs were calling in force. Since then my buddies and I have these frogs dialed in, and ‘Operation Snoring Thunder’ is an annual event with a moveable date. Crawfish frogs are vary wary, but I can rely on finding at least one derpy induhvidual who isn’t paying attention (see bottom photo).
