Isla Santa Catalina Whiptail

Aspidoscelis catalinensis
(Van Denburgh & Slevin, 1921)
Isla Santa Catalina, Baja Sur, Mexico. September 4, 2013

The whiptails on Santa Catalina Island are very wary, and despite multiple attempts I couldn’t get close enough to observe and photograph one – they would take off like a shot, and run into the nearest patch of prickly shrubs. The approach of bad weather cut short our time on the island, and with minutes remaining I gave it one last try. At last, a slightly less-wary lizard allowed me to get within a dozen feet or so, long enough for me to take a few shots.
