Trans-Pecos Copperhead

Agkistrodon contortrix pictigaster
Gloyd & Conant, 1943
Crockett Co., Texas. May 31, 2014.

It took six trips to the Trans-Pecos for me to see a pictigaster.  Ian Jessup and I were road-cruising one night near Iraan, Texas, and stopped to look at a toad in the road. Ian spotted a copperhead on the move behind a stand of cactus near the roadside, and the dry spell was broken.

NOTE: I have not followed the Agkistrodon synonomies of Burbrink & Guiher 2014, pending further studies making use of appropriate sample sizes.
